Don’t forget that your Unit 1 exam is in the morning of Monday, 14th June 2010.

Unit 1 is all about the Urban Environment: rapid urbanisation, environmental hazards, natural hazards, reducing deprivation, regneration, transport, LEDC cities, shanty towns, MEDC cities, sustainability, eco-towns and cities for the 21st Century…

Volcano keeps Geography teachers at bay!

The cloud of ash from this volcanic eruption is currently keeping Mr and Mrs Farmer in Hong Kong. Two interns from Oxford due to start at The Warriner are also stranded in Sicily and Spain!

The decision to close the airspace was based on a belief that the ash posed a significant danger to aircraft. More info here:

Eco-towns: The Government’s view

We need more homes in the UK. Population increase, combined with a rise in the number of people living alone has created huge demand.

But ‘the environment’ is also high on the government’s agenda. Building houses takes away trees and green fields; the concrete used, the machinery, lorries and so on all cause some level of damage. So, how can houses become more environmentally friendly?

One suggestion is eco-towns; the benefits are outlined here.

This is a fascinating project – combining GIS (Geographical Information Systems) with the science of ecosystems, species and landscapes, they have recreated a virtual version of Manhattan, NYC, 200 years ago. They also offer some ideas for the future of our cities – ways to use natural ideas to make them more sustainable, better places to live in.
